Having dependable small boat motors is very important for your safety, as well as for the life of your boat. If you do not have a reliable motor your boat may wind up in the middle of the lake with no way for you to get back to shore. Paddling by hand is not fun, as anyone in that situation can tell you. This is why many people buy their boat motors new.

However, you can buy them used as well and have just as much luck. You just have to be a wary consumer. First, you have to know what to look for when searching out used boat motors. By being an informed consumer you will save money on your used small boat motors as well as on expensive repairs later on down the road.

Small boat motors have many parts, including the propeller, the engine, and many smaller components. It is important that these are all checked to the best of your ability before buying used small boat motors. If you buy used small boat motors you will likely not have the warranty that new motors come with, so it becomes even more vital that you make sure it is in good working order before you purchase one.

There are many good, reputable dealers in boat motors that will be a good choice for starting your shopping experience. These dealers will be more likely to allow you to test the motor in their shop. They are also more likely to offer some type of extremely limited, short term warranty so that you are not out a lot of money within a few days of buying the used boat motors. If you buy one from an auction site, you should make sure that the dealer has good feedback and offers some type of refund policy or warranty.

There are many things to look for when buying used boat motors. Take it for a test drive if it is currently attached to a boat. This way you can easily tell if something obvious is wrong with the motor. Find out the age of the motor and what repairs have been completed on it. Check the general condition by outward glance, and be sure to look for welding marks. If welding has been done or if there are any dents, you should look elsewhere for small boat motors.

In order to fully check the used small boat motors you will need to have a compression test done. A reputable dealer will have the equipment to do this in their shop and allow you to be present for the test. You should also check for any fuel, water or exhaust leaks by removing the cowl. If you are not mechanically inclined you should take along a friend to help you check the used boat motors.

Outboard Boat Motors
Outboard boat motors are commonly found on small water-crafts. Their primary uses are either as an easy means of propulsion across the water, or as a back up system when mounted to a small sailing craft. There is a growing use of electric outboard boat motors since they are considered totally safe for boats and are eco-friendly to both the atmosphere and the water. They are healthier for us humans, as well, since we do not have to inhale carbon monoxide any more.
It is important that you familiarize yourself with how to utilize outbound boat motors. The easiest way to do this is speak with someone else that has experience with the use of outbound boat motors. You can, also, review a manual or catch a quick tutorial on the use of outboard boat motors. The main tips to keep in mind are to first lower the prop end of the motor into the water before turning the ignition and starting the motor. The reasons for this is that the prop system is designed to operate in the water, and by over revving the motor while is out of the water can burn up the system. The other of course is that a moving prop can cause injuries to individuals that are careless enough to get near it when it running. The rest is just learning which way the outboard boat motors steers and how the throttle functions to propel the craft across the water.
When in shallow waters you might use another means of propulsion until you are in deeper water. The reason for this is that you don’t want the props to get damaged from rocks or entangled by the plant live growing along the shore line. If you are out on the water and your motor begins to make funny sounds be sure to immediately shut down and turn off the outboard boat motors. This is generally because you have hit something with your props, or that they have ensnared something. Once you have turned off the outboard boat motors you can easily lift the prop end of the motor out of the water to inspect the props for damage or entanglement. If it is a simple matter of entanglement you can easily remove the problem, but do not toss back into the water to cause future problems to you or someone else, and then return the props back to the water before restarting the outboard boat motors. If the props, on the other hand, have been damaged then generally you are stuck using another means of propulsion until you can get it repaired.

In today’s era of electronics it was just a matter of time before electric boat motors became another benchmark in the electric revolution. There is no field that hasn’t seen the effects of electricity, and its benefits, in the use of machinery and devices that help enhances a person live of ease. The electric motor is just another extension of this providing quick accessible, clean propulsion through the water for the enjoyment of boat lovers.
Electric motors are enclosed with in a self-contained unit, and are easy and quick to use. They are generally intended for small watercraft use all though newer advances in electric storage devices are beginning to revolutionize this field as well, and can be found on small yachts as well. The electric boat motors are as hassle free as possible these days so that the boat owner can get more enjoyment out of their boat.
Upon entering the water an outboard electric boat motors will start to incline forward over its mounts to promote the props. This allows the transmission to hang out of the water to protect the props from entangling with water plant live or bang against unseen rocks. These boat motors are becoming very self-reliant allowing for longer adventures out on the water.
With the increased expense of fuel, and the concern of harmful particles evicting the environment, the electric boat motors have increased in sales over the last several years. This has caused the manufacturers to create improvements in power storage and performance of the electric boat motors. Not just for a cheaper solution for energy, but in order to minimize the risk of air and water pollution.
When deciding to purchase a boat with an electric motor you do need to consider a couple of key factors. Investigate the company to see if they are reliable and dependable. That the warranty and other free services for your electric motors have been satisfactory to other customers, and what the warranty does cover, or doesn’t, on your electric boat motors. Be sure to see if they are a local or big chain store, as well, because this can determine where you will go to purchase your electric boat motors; especially if you like to travel to other locations with your boat for recreational water sports. After all if you have a problem with your electric boat motors you don’t want to find yourself someplace where your warranty isn’t accepted.

Boat Motor Parts: How to Upgrade Your Old Boat

There are many reasons you might wish to upgrade your boat motor parts. For one thing, it is much cheaper to upgrade your boat motor than to buy a new one. You may want more speed or you may simply need to change out a part before it goes out on you in the middle of the lake. Whatever the case may be, it is fairly easy to upgrade motor parts to suit your needs.
Upgrading your boat motor will mean replacing a lot of motor parts. Speed will always be a boat owner's obsession and there is a continuous desire for a more powerful boat motor. Unfortunately power doesn't come cheap. But fortunately it can come cheaper than buying a new boat motor altogether when you upgrade motor parts.
However, be warned that the results of upgrading motor parts is that when you change one part you are likely to change another, and another, and another. Some stock boat motor parts will not be able to make up for the boost in power brought on by suping up a specific component.
Here is a great example of how upgrading motor parts can work. Let’s say you boost your boat motor’s horsepower by 50 percent, or even more, with a supercharger/EFI kit. But the upgrade destroys the stock stern-drive, which means you'll need to change out those motor parts with ones that can handle the power you added with the other boat motor parts.
Now your boosted-up engine can go faster, but only if it has a bigger-pitch propeller. Your propeller will have to be changed with a four or five-blade one. Unfortunately, the extra speed your boat will be running at will destroy your cable-assist hydraulic steering system. Now you'll have to change out the cable-assist to a full hydraulic steering system, causing you to buy even more boat motor parts.
The good news of all this is that once you have changed all those boat motor parts you will still have spent less money than you would spend on a brand new faster boat motor. It takes a lot of work and extra time to upgrade your boat, but it is well worth the effort once your modified boat motor is complete. This can even increase the value of your boat, and cause you to have even more fun out on the water.
